During our recent theme on Outer Space the children and I decided we needed a rocket to play in and practice our spaceman skills. We bought a large cardboard one from Amazon and started painting ....everyone got involved in getting red paint onto it and onto themselves.

After much fun and several of the same spots painted over and over again our rocket was ready to zoom. Since then we’ve been adding to it so it now has a blue ceiling which we will

cover in stars and planets. We’ve painted a backdrop and made some spacemen and rockets to send into space. We’ve even eaten space food that real astronauts eat - almost as tasty as the polystyrene rocket. Stories about spotting aliens, travelling into space and discussions about Star Wars have all helped fire imagination and provide opportunities to develop other activities for them. The children have since been revisiting their rocket which  has a space blanket in it - great for scrunching up. It’s also been invaded by, surprisingly, a cat. Obviously everyone’s welcome to visit it!

This theme will keep us entertained for a long time but as Spring is just around the corner we may have to pack up our rocket and visit a farm instead. I wonder if Horton Park Farm has parking for rockets...
